Aggro Decks for 3 Star Masters

hearthstone-aggro-decks

Right now in Hearthstone, the name of the game is aggression on the Ranked ladder. A solid aggro deck can deal with most things you’re likely to be matched up against, including those pesky OTK Hunters and Ice Block Mage burn decks. The key to these decks at the moment is a bunch of good, cheap neutral creatures, combined with a few class specific cards, either more efficient creatures or good removal. In this article, I’ll go over some of the standard neutral cards, and then a few class-specific deck lists to get you started. I am by no means a professional player, but I still hope this guide can be useful to people looking for a good place to start in ranked.

Cheap Neutral Cards:

Argent Squire - This card on its own is not really more than an annoyance. What makes it great is playing it with ‘buffing’ creatures like Shattered Sun Clerics, Defenders of Argus, and Dark Iron Dwarf, which turn a 1 damage divine shield into a 2 or 3 damage one. Alternative 1-drop cards to this would be something like Leper Gnome or Abusive Sergeant.

Acidic Swamp Ooze - 3/2 for 2 is good, and very annoying for rogues, warriors and paladins.

Faerie Dragon - Solid in any aggro deck, as it cannot die to single target removal. Its still vulnerable to weapons and creatures of course, but a 3/2 will usually trade reasonably well.

Knife Juggler - Good card, but don’t expect it to live long. People HATE this card.

Amani Beserker - Good card, but I don’t usually play it outside of mage, where you can ping it yourself with the hero power to enrage it.

Novice Engineer - Draws a card, so you get a 1/2 body, which again can be buffed, and don’t lose any card advantage for it. You could also play Loot Hoarder, which can trade better in early game as it has 2 attack, but the Engineer seems to be the preferred choice at the moment.

Raging Worgen - Similar to amani beserker, but I have found that often it ends up just being a 3/3 for 3 outside of mage decks.

Harvest Golem - Just an incredibly efficient card, very often a 2 for 1.

Acolyte of Pain - Particularly good in mage decks, since you can ping it to draw a card

Shattered Sun Cleric - A 3/3 that gives +1/+1 to another creature. Another solid card

Scarlet Crusader - Usually a 2 for 1, but suffers against mages since the ping breaks the shield. On the other hand them having to ping may slow them down. A good card, but there are usually better 3 drops.

Defender of Argus - Taunt is always nice to have, but the +1/+1 to adjacent minions is what makes this card fantastic.

Dark Iron Dwarf - Another nice buffing card, and a 4/4 body for 4 mana is never bad either.

Azure Drake - +1 spell damage buffs all removal, which can be crucial, and the fact you draw a card means you lose no card advantage by playing this.

Argent Commander - Probably the best neutral card in the game right now. Usually at least a 2 for 1.

Legendary Cards:

These cards are not 100% essential if you’re really on a budget but are great to have if you can afford them.

Bloodmage Thalnos - May not seem like the ‘coolest’ legendary to craft, but a fantastic card. The spell damage is great to combo with your removal, and you draw a card if he dies.

Sylvanas Windrunner - A 5/5 for 5 at the very least, which is still good. Can be incredibly awkward for the opponent to deal with, forcing them to avoid dropping big creatures, or to take bad trades to get rid of the threat.

Ragnaros The Firelord - Might be controversial to include in an aggro deck, but I think he has a place in non-mage decks as a finisher similar to Pyroblast.

Decklists:

[two_thirds]Rogue:

I used to run Defias Ringleader, but I’ve really gone off that card. It’s great if you can coin it out, but it’s a bit too unreliable for my liking, and if it’s your only 2 drop you might be stuck with having to play a 2/2 for 2 mana, which is not good. There’s a Doge House variant (Nyhx, Gnimsh, ekop I think) of this deck which runs Blade Flurry and Spiteful Smith instead of the Faerie Dragons and Azure Drakes, Spiteful smith is very nice as its enrage makes your hero power dagger deal 3 damage while its up.

[two_thirds]Mage:

This is the deck I’m using at the moment, but there’s a lot of variations you can do with this one. You could try running things like Cone of Cold or Blizzard, but I wouldn’t run too many of these, maybe one of each. You could run water elementals instead of the Dark Iron Dwarves. Leper Gnomes could be a good replacement for Argent Squire, since you want to get as much hero damage as possible then finish them off with Pyroblast. Some people also like to play Arcane Missiles or Mirror Image. You could also swap out one of the 3 drops for Raging Worgen, probably the Shattered Sun Cleric. In the end, the best way to know is to try the variants out and find which one suits you the best.

[two_thirds]Warlock:

Basically the Doge House deck list, I just added another Power Overwhelming instead of Shadowflame. A really good deck, and warlock is a great aggro class since your hero power gives you draw. Shadow Bolt could be worth running, but I’m not sure about this yet.

I didn’t invent these deck lists by any means, they’re all modifications of stuff I’ve seen good players use. If you want to find cool decks, the KOTH here on ihearthu is a great place to look.

Some General Tips for playing the decks:

- Know when to trade and when to hit the hero. You want damage on the hero, but you don’t want to lose board position. If you think their minions aren’t much of a threat ( a 1/1 when you have 3/3s) then hitting the hero can be the best option, but be very careful of leaving small minions out against buffing classes like Paladin and Priest. Also, if you think they are going to board wipe you next turn with a spell, then trade with their minions usually, or you will end up in a bad position. Most of this stuff comes from practice, and I’m still figuring it out myself.

- Don’t be afraid to play a buffing creature if you have nothing else to play, you might have no creatures to buff but playing nothing will leave you worse off, as you lose a lot of tempo.

- Don’t overcommit to the board. Be very wary of board wipes, and keep the opponent’s mana in mind to know when these might be coming. You don’t want to play a bunch of 2 toughness creatures the turn before a Consecrate. It’s usually better in the long run to hold some creatures back, even if it costs you some short term damage.

- Share the love. You don’t want to put all of your buffs on one creature, only to lose it to removal. On the other hand, this can be worse against board wipes. It often depends on what deck you’re playing against. The main thing is being aware of what removal your opponent is likely to be playing, and protecting against it as best you can.

Conclusion:

These are just some of the decks I’ve had some good success with in Ranked. There are lots of others. Check out streams, KOTH, tournaments, as much as you can to find good deck lists for your favourite classes. Still, I hope that this gave you some ideas to get you started in the Ranked ladder. Thanks for reading!

  1. For the mana cost there isn’t really sadly. In today’s KOTH Savij I think used a Jaraxxus instead in the Warlock deck, if you’re lucky enough to have one. You can still win with the decks without him, he’s just nice to have. I can’t really think of any class cards that serve the same ‘finisher’ purpose. I guess you could run something like an Assassinate or Siphon Soul, or even something like a Sprint in the Rogue deck, but I haven’t tried using these cards so I’m not too sure how that would work out. Alternatively just some other good neutral card.

Was thinking for the Warlock deck the Stormwind Champion

  3. to the mage deck: i am playing something like that but a little more spellheavy:

in my oppinion leper gnome is much better than the argent squire in the mage deck because you want to deal as much damage as possible as fast as possible. and a 2/1 which deals a nearly guaranteed 2 damage, most of the times even more if you drop him turn 1, is just so much better than a 1/1 with divine shield which trades with nearly nothing without getting buffed.

also i like arcane missiles because it makes the wyrm so much better. turn 1 wyrm, turn 2 arcane missiles to kille their drop and diretlcy attack is just such a strong play.

i also made many opponents leave after my second turn because i played when going second turn 1 wyrm, turn 2 wyrm, coin, arcane missiles. now i had 2 3/3 on an empty field on turn2. you really should test them, they are much stronger than they look, even if sometimes you can get very unlucky with them.

mirror image is not the way to go i think, since you dont want defensive cards in an agressive deck.

also i really lke to play 1 blizzard, 1 cone of cold and 1 flamestrike. because these are the spells which can give you a comeback when you get a little behind. which can always happen. without these you probably just always lose if you dont win early game and the opponent gets the board advantage once.

water elemental is a good 4-drop btw. it normaly kills every other 4-drop without dying by itselfs, and if it can attack vs especialy warriors, it can really lock them down with a perma freeze if they rely on weapons.

  4. Im actually running Arcane Missiles instead of Amani Bezerker at the moment. Mirror Image can actually be great in an aggressive deck because you can hit them to the face with your creatures while they have to hit your mirror images, and if you have to trade it lets you pick the trades you want rather than those they want. The AOE spells I’m undecided on, I would consider running one blizzard and cone of cold. They can be great for tempo if you’re even, or to stall for a pyroblast, but they’re quite situational, esp cone of cold so I prefer to run more reliably good things. As far as Leper Gnome, Argent Squire is a better draw later on in the game, and can often trade 2 for 1 with their creatures, which I’ll take over trading for 1 and 2 damage to the face anyway. Leper Gnome is fine, I just think Argent is much better, and pretty much every aggro deck I’ve seen is running it now instead of the GNome, which everyone used to run.
