Not So Legendary - The Legendary Replacement Guide

Old Murk-Eye

Designation: Tempo Play

Replace with: Chillwind Yeti or Stormwind Knight

Reasoning: Old Murk-Eye, unlike Leeroy, has more health, and no drawback. So he is used a board stabilizer, or early rusher, instead of a finisher. The Stormwind Knight has the Charge and health of the Murk-Eye. The Chillwind Yeti, while lacking the charge, has closer attack level equivalent.

Captain Greenskin

Designation: Tempo Play

Replace with: Spiteful Smith

Reasoning: Both solid body creatures, with benefits to your weapon.

Elite Tauren Chieftain

Designation: Unknown

Replace with: Unknown

Reasoning: There Ain’t No Party like an Elite Tauren Chieftain Party.

Harrison Jones

Designation: Removal Effect

Replace with: Acidic Swamp Ooze

Reasoning: The main focus here is destroying your opponents weapon, so the Ooze is a solid choice.

Cairne Bloodhoof

Designation: Tempo Play

Replace with: Boulderfist Ogre

Reasoning: See Boulderfist Ogre Section below.

Gelbin Mekkatorque

Designation: Tempo Play

Replace with: Spending some money in the store

Reasoning: Support the game you enjoy, even if it is a small amount, and get your pretty golden promotional Gelbin Mekkatorque to play with. Simple as that! (offer expires while you wait, operators are standing by. - the golden version is a pretty beta only goodie for helping test the ingame store) Pfft, who needs a placeholder…

Hogger

Designation: Tempo Play

Replace with: Silver Hand Knight or Fen Creeper

Reasoning: Sure it doesn’t have taunt, and it certainly doesn’t make one every turn, but with the Silver Hand Knight you are still getting a 4 / 4 and a 2 / 2 on short notice. If the purpose is to hold back a horde of minions, the Fen Creeper makes a similarly sized Taunt critter to deal with.

  1. What about Cenarius? It’s not on the list. Which one is the best replacement to Tinkmaster? Cobra or Spellbreaker.

  2. Sunwalker or Argent Commader could be proper replacements for Cairne too. Maybe the’re vulnerable to 3 hero powers, but against other classes these two still force trade 2v1 or usage of morph/silence based card.

Grull can be somewhat simulated by Questing Adventurer with his growth effect, but only when your deck is based on low mana cards.

  3. Thanks for writing such a detailed guide. This post seems to be one of the best resources around. I would be interested in a follow-up a comprehensive list of EPIC cards replacements, since the 400 dust crafting cost really adds up… https://hearthsubs.com has helped out some, but I’d like help with epic cards as well.
