Decks to Get Your Grind On

Hello everyone! Today I wanted to talk about the current state of Hearthstone ranked metagame. What decks I think are best suited to climb the ladder and what decks you should be looking to build if you’re starting out.

In my opinion, the best performing decks right now are the following, in order of relevance:

Warlock: With the nerf to Mage’s AoE spells these decks have risen to the top again. Whether it is Murlocs or the pump version (the one with Argent Squires and lots of creatures that pump each other), it is probably the deck you have to be more prepared against.

Rogue: Rogue decks are remarkably efficient, and very good at defeating Warlock , thus the reason why they are so high up in the list. Another good thing about Rogue decks is that they can take both the beatdown and the control role depending on the matchup.

Druid: If these decks weren’t so damn expensive, druid would be, with no doubt, top 1. The combination of cheap removal, efficient mid-game creatures and late game bombs (legendaries) make this class very well suited in the current metagame. However, for it to work, there has to be a ton of legends in it. So it’s unlikely you will face a lot of them, specially in lower ranks.

Shaman: Shaman is the class I started with and one I believe is very well suited for the current metagame. The combination of early removal and lots of efficient taunt creatures make it very good against Warlock and Rogue. However it is weak against Druid and Mage, that’s why it isn’t higher on the list.

Mage: Mage has been nerfed, but it is still there and so is pyroblast. They are especially good against mid-range decks such as Shaman and Rogue. However Warlock is no longer a favorable matchup, and it is very weak against druid. It’s been falling out of favour at the top ranks lately.

Paladin: Paladin’s lack of AoE spells makes him a poor choice nowadays. Most Warlock decks will get out of control really fast and it will require a two card combo to wipe the board. That’s not reliable. On top of that it has no clear favorable matchups besides Mage.

I believe the remaining classes are not worth mentioning. There are some builds that might work out however, so feel free to experiment if you want. Just be sure your deck can beat Warlock, otherwise is probably not a good option.

My last advice regarding this topic is that if you try to make a deck, Wild Pyromancer is probably the card you always want to be playing.

Now as I said, I know most of you guys are just starting out and don’t have many (if any) legendaries to work with, so I wanted to give you a couple of cheap budget decklists to start climbing the ladder with.

This is the deck I used to get from rank 25 all the way up to rank 2. It’s proven to be quite successful. Even at the highest ranks.

2x Forked Lightning
2x Lightning Bolt
2x Earth Shock
2x Stormforged Axe
1x Bloodmage Thalnos
2x Wild Pyromancer
2x Feral Spirit
2x Harvest Golem
2x Lightning Storm
2x Unbound Elemental
2x Defender of Argus
2x Earth Elemental
1x Sylvanas Windrunner
2x Fire Elemental
2x Sunwalker / Argent Commander

You can replace the two legendaries with 2x Earthen Ring Farseer if you don’t have them, but if you like the deck I recommend you get them as soon as possible, specially Bloodmage Thalnos. If you have something like Ragnaros the Firelord, Ysera or The Black Knight you can also replace them with those.

Keep in mind that this list is quite weak against Mage decks and you will probably face many in lower brackets. They are not unbeatable but they are tough.

Second is a common Murloc Warlock list that doesn’t run any legendary besides Old Murk-Eye, which is given for free when you unlock all the murlocs. It’s a very efficient and fast deck that will get you out of the lower brackets easily.

2x Soulfire
2x Power Overwhelming
2x Blood Imp
2x Flame Imp
2x Young Priestess
2x Grimscale Oracle
2x Murloc Raider
2x Murloc Tidecaller
2x Voidwalker
1x Demonfire
2x Bluegill Warrior
2x Knife Juggler
2x Murloc Tidehunter
2x Coldlight Oracle
2x Murloc Warleader
1x Old Murk-Eye

This list is weak against AoE spells (Specially decks running Wild Pyromancer) and Rogues. However, it will catch off-guard most of your lower rank opponents. In my opinion a very reliable choice to climb with.

I’d also like to point out that there are many Rogue decklists that are quite cheap, but I haven’t played them much so I can’t recommend a proper one. If you like the archetype I’m sure you can find some running around.

Well, I believe that’s all for today people. I hope you found this article helpful and that you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing. If you have any questions feel free to comment here, ask me on my stream or give me a message on twitter.

Thanks for reading,

  1. The shaman deck seems to be missing 2 cards unless both argent commanders and sunwalkers are meant to be counted.

  2. I’ve always liked shaman, but havent really been able to make a good deck with it. How would you change the shaman deck if you didnt care to have it on a budget? I noticed it has 0 hard removal, so maybe something like tinkmaster or black knight to make it stronger, in particular against druids.

1x Forked Lightning (can range from 0-2 depending on meta)
    2x Lightning Bolt
    1x Earth Shock
(can range from 0-2 depending on meta)
    2x Stormforged Axe
    2x Novice Engineer
    1x Bloodmage Thalnos
    2x Wild Pyromancer
    2x Harvest Golem

    1x Tinkmaster Overspark
    1x Earthen Ring Farseer
    2x Hex
    2x Lightning Storm
    2x Unbound Elemental
    2x Defender of Argus
    1x Earth Elemental
    1x Sylvanas Windrunner
    2x Fire Elemental

    1x The Black Knight
    1x Cairne Bloodhoof
    1x Ragnaros

This is a little bit of a rough draft, but that is the direction I would take it.

    • Oh, I just realized a couple things about the article. First, after been playing in Legend for quite a while, I realized that Mage is actually stronger than I thought it was, so I would put it a bit higher, probably above Rogue and below Druid.

A second thing I noticed… I forgot to put the Hex’es on the Shaman list! The list has 28 cards, so there goes the two missing ones.

In response to @MythiC… I believe the ideal list is very similar to the one that Varranis posted, although I would change a couple cards, here’s how I would do it (I do not have all the legendaries yet so there’s a bit of speculation going on).

      1x Forked Lightning
      2x Lightning Bolt
      1x Earth Shock
      1x Nat Pagle
      2x Stormforged Axe
      2x Loot Hoarder
      1x Bloodmage Thalnos
      2x Wild Pyromancer
      2x Harvest Golem
      1x Tinkmaster Overspark
      1x Earthen Ring Farseer
      2x Hex
      2x Lightning Storm
      2x Unbound Elemental
      2x Defender of Argus
      1x Earth Elemental
      1x Sylvanas Windrunner
      2x Fire Elemental
      1x The Black Knight
      1x Ragnaros the Firelord

I believe Loot Hoarders are better than Novices in this deck because there is no way to finish off toughness 2 creatures like Rogue and Mage can. They are slightly worse against Mage, but then again that is a very unfavorable matchup already. I’m unsure about Cairne Bloodhoof too, I don’t like it much but if there is not much silence being played it might be really good.

  5. cheers for this guide. gonna try this deck out apart from thalnos. hopefully it can do better than my warlock aggro deck which got me to r6

  6. About the Shaman deck, Earth Elemental can be 2 or 0 in the deck depend on the meta, 1-2 weeks ago, every deck was running 1 big game hunter, 1 think master, 1 black knight, which was devastating for shaman, right now still black knight and think master is played, i still consider not playing Earth Elemental, he has a big effect on the board when you play him, but if you can’t get any value out him and he gets destroyed the turn you play, you have a big disadvantage. (but in the lower brackets earth elemental is hard to deal with, not many players own black knight+thinkmaster)

you might consider playing 1 doomhammer, (as an option), even i’ve seen alakir as a finisher (next to flame totem + 2 rockbiters) (I know not many people is a fan of alakir as well)

  7. The problem with Rockbiter Weapon is that you already take a ton of damage using Stormforged Axe, and that if you already have a Stormforged Axe equipped you can not use it as efficiently. I’ve seen some builds running Doomhammer and Al’Akir that used it, but honestly I don’t like it that much. The card is good but I think the alternatives are better.

  8. So nobody here runs Rockbiter weapon?

Rockbiter is very good. I honestly just forgot about it when posting a list. I would run 1-2, probably dropping Earth Shock. Don’t forget you can cast it on your totems or Novice Engineers if you’re worried about taking damage.

  9. Guys check out this deck i grinded about 3 hours from rank 20 to 11.
    2x Earth Shock.
    2x Rockbiter Weapon.
    2x Flametongue Totem.
    2x Haunted Creeper.
    2x Nerubian Egg.
    2xFeral Spirit.
    2x Hex.
    2x Lightning Storm.
    2x Harvest Golem.
    1x Mana Tide Totem.
    1x Unbound Elemental.
    1x Dark Iron Dwarf.
    2x Defender Of Argus.
    2x Azure Drake
    1x Loatheb
    1x Sludge Belcher
    2x Fire Elemental
    1x Ragnaros The FireLord.

The deck can have some variotion like instead of 1x Sludge Belcher:1x Sylvanas Windrunner.
Or instead of 1x Ragnaros The FireLord:1x Black Knight.
